Frequently Asked Questions About Carpet

What is the Best Carpet for Stairs?

We recommend a more hard-wearing and durable carpet for stairs in the home, since they're typically the area that faces the most pressure and traffic on a daily basis. Polypropylene material carpets are a great option, as they are much more affordable and long-lasting than other comparable carpet fibres.

Visit our curated stair carpet collection page to browse our available products that are suitable for use on stairs or in hallways.

What is the Best Carpet for Bedrooms?

Luxury, soft pile carpets are often the first choice carpet for bedrooms, offering the best possible comfort and warmth for the more relaxing areas of the home. For this reason, Saxony carpets are often the most popular among those wanting to upgrade their main bedroom.

What is the Best Carpet for Spare Bedrooms?

Thicker, soft pile Saxony or twist carpets are what we typically recommend as the best for spare bedrooms, as they offer the best warmth and comfort for creating a cosy guest bedroom. If you aren't using the room much, you may opt for a lower-maintenance loop or twist pile carpet.

Which Carpet Should I Buy?

The question of ‘which carpet should I buy?’ is a difficult one, as it depends on the room type that you’re looking to upgrade, the budget that you have available, and the desired look and effect that you want the carpet to have once installed.

To get started, we recommend checking out our many different curated collection pages, for all carpet types, rooms, and price ranges. From there, you can filter different styles, colours, and patterns, and even order free sample products of the ranges that you think might be the best fit.

Which Carpet Material is Best?

We recommend polypropylene as the best carpet material for those looking to upgrade and modernise the rooms in their home. As well as being more hard-wearing and durable than other traditional carpet materials, the fibres are also more water and stain-resistant, and can be cleaned with a bleach solution.

How Do I Measure For Carpet?

To measure accurately for a new carpet in your home, simply measure your room's length and width, taking into account trims and door frames. For irregular room shapes that aren't square or rectangular, you'll need to accommodate for this, too. You should always allow an additional excess for waste.

Remember, our carpet product pages will automatically do some of the calculations for you, such as how much it will cost for each room, based on the carpet type that you’re interested in. If you need further help with measuring your home for your new carpet order, get in touch with our team.

How Do I Prevent My Carpet from Wrinkling?

In order to properly prevent your carpet from buckling and wrinkling over time, proper installation is extremely important. You also want to make sure that you're choosing the right underlay pairing depending on the room type, and avoiding water damage through mess and spillages as much as possible.

Which Carpet Type is Best for High Traffic?

We recommend a durable, hard-wearing loop or dense twist/Saxony carpet as the best for high traffic areas of the home. More resilient materials, such as polypropylene, are also longer-lasting, and choosing the right underlay where required is also an extremely important factor.

All of our carpet product ranges at Carpet Warehouse feature a modern polypropylene composition and design, not only making them much easier to clean and maintain, but also improving their durability and resistance against fading over time.

Which Carpet is Best for a Rental Property?

For landlords looking to fit a rental property with a carpet that will be resilient in the long run, loop pile carpets may be the best choice. These are often stain-resistant in the event of spillages, and retain their shape against high amounts of footfall and even moving furniture for rotating tenants.

Loop pile carpets are often much simpler to clean than other pile types, and often help to blend in discolouration over time due to their multi-toned fibres.

Why Does My Carpet Display Footprints?

Deeper pile and luxurious carpets - such as Saxony, for instance - will often react to your movements and pressure, leaving an imprint as the fibres bend during use. This is why dual-tone carpets sometimes shift in colour and depth as light reflects off the plush, moving fibres.

When Should I Replace My Carpet?

Carpets typically can last up to 15 years from when first installed, but are more likely to wear down faster in busy areas of the home, such as on stairs, in hallways, and in family living areas. These rooms are usually the ones you should look to upgrade first.

Why is Carpet Cleaning Important?

Aside from keeping hygienic and maintaining the desired effect, carpet cleaning is extremely important for health reasons. Regular or professional cleaning helps to remove dust mites and bacteria (as well as general allergens) from fibres, which can help with breathing and overall air quality between rooms in the home.

Our carpet product ranges are comprised of modern polypropylene fibres, a ‘family-friendly’ material that is more water-resistant than other carpet fibres, and can be cleaned with a bleach solution.

Why is There a Line in My New Carpet?

Some carpets can display a line throughout - typically close to the wall - called a ‘pole mark’. This is quite common in brand new carpets and appears temporarily as a result of how the carpet is rolled tightly during delivery. You can vacuum this area of the carpet to help the pile return to its normal shape, but it should go back to normal on its own over time.

If you’re still having issues with your carpet after installation, or the line isn’t showing any signs of disappearing, please get in touch with our team so that we can assist further.

How Much Does it Cost to Carpet My Room?

The costs involved with carpeting the chosen room in your home depend on both its size and the type of carpet that you’re looking to purchase. Luckily, our website’s automatic calculator feature will do all of the hard work for you. To get an instant valuation, simply select any product from our vast ranges, and enter the dimensions of your chosen room.

Which Underlay Is the Best for Carpet?

Selecting the right underlay pairing for your carpet is extremely important, but again it depends on the style that you’re going for, and the room type that your carpet is going to be installed in. As a general rule of thumb, you’ll want to ensure that you choose a thicker underlay for rooms that are going to be subject to higher traffic - such as landings and hallways, a great choice is our 11mm Super High Density Underlay.

What is the Best Carpet for Pets?

We recommend polypropylene material carpets as the most pet-friendly available currently, as they're stain-resistant and easy to clean. If you're worried about your pet scratching and potentially damaging the fibres, you may wish to opt for a shorter loop pile carpet, that will be more resilient against tough wear.

Frequently Asked Questions About Vinyl Flooring

How Much Vinyl Flooring Do I Need?

That depends on the room, or rooms, that you’re looking to fit with new flooring. To figure out exactly how much vinyl flooring you’ll need, multiply the length of your chosen room by the width, and make sure to account for things like trimming and door frames. If your room isn’t a standard rectangle or square shape, you’ll need to accommodate for these differences, too.

Which Vinyl Flooring is Waterproof?

All of our vinyl flooring ranges at Carpet Warehouse are 100% waterproof, making them suitable for a variety of different room types, including bathrooms.

What is Vinyl Flooring?

Vinyl flooring is an extremely durable and hard-wearing floor type, available in a wide variety of styles and thicknesses depending on your ideal home look. Easy to clean and often suitable for pets, it's a popular choice for homeowners wanting to upgrade their rooms affordably for the long term.

How is Vinyl Flooring Installed?

Vinyl flooring is laid in one seamless piece usually, unless your room is very large. This is also important if you’re installing vinyl in a bathroom, and don’t want any water to leak through cracks into the floor.

Can I Pair Underlay with My Vinyl Flooring?

We do not recommend using underlay with our vinyl flooring products. Our rolls are designed with a built-in base layer, and do not require added underlay. For additional comfort, opt for a thicker, cushioned vinyl flooring range.

Which Vinyl Flooring is Best for Dogs?

All of the vinyl flooring ranges that we offer are pet-friendly, so they will be hard-wearing and durable against everyday wear and play with your dog. If you’re worried about your pets doing damage to your vinyl flooring over time you may choose to opt for a more substantial roll with a thicker wear layer.

Which Vinyl Flooring is Best for Bathrooms?

Any of the vinyl flooring options that we offer at Carpet Warehouse are 100% waterproof and thus suitable for bathrooms. One important point to consider, however, is that you install a single sheet of vinyl without any cracks or gaps, to ensure water can’t seep through over time.

Will Vinyl Flooring Stain?

Our vinyl flooring ranges feature stain-resistant materials and are easy to clean and maintain, making them a popular choice among families and in busy homes with plenty of footfall. Ranges with a higher wear layer (and added PU lacquer) have added durability, making them a better choice for more intensive use.

Will Vinyl Flooring Scratch?

Our vinyl flooring ranges are scratch-resistant, hardwearing and durable. Depending on the usage and amount of traffic the room you’re looking to install your flooring in is receiving, you may decide to go for a flooring roll type with an added thickness and wear layer, as this will further help to prevent scuffs and scratches in the long run.

Can Vinyl Flooring be Laid Over Carpet?

We would recommend against installing vinyl flooring over an existing carpet, as it will create an uneven surface and reduce its effectiveness over time. Instead, remove any existing flooring and adhesive before starting afresh with your new vinyl flooring roll.

Should I Remove Old Vinyl Flooring Before Installing New Flooring?

In some instances, if your existing vinyl flooring is even-surfaced and in good condition, you may be able to install new flooring types over the top. However, we recommend fully removing any existing vinyl flooring and clearing adhesive residues before starting again with an upgraded roll.

Is Vinyl Flooring Better than Linoleum?

Vinyl flooring is similar to linoleum, but has a manmade material base, making it much more resilient and low-maintenance. Between these benefits and the fact that it's much more widely available in different styles as a result, it's a popular choice in busy homes.
